Rene Russo was born in Burbank California. She was the daughter of Shirley (Balocca) Barmaid as well as a factory laborer, and Nino Russo. The mechanic father of Rene left her when Rene was just turning 2. The mother of Rene was the sole caregiver for Rene. Her father is of Italian heritage, and her mother is German-English Irish and Italian roots. Rene's scoliosis became so serious that she needed to wear a torso brace for the entire time in Junior High School. Rene was already a tall girl, which led to her being given the title of Jolly Green Giant from her peers. Her brace was removed when she entered Burroughs High School with Ron Howard, but even after that her personality still was a bit isolated. Unable to deal with academics and school life, Rene quit school in the tenth grade. Over the next 18-months, she took many part-time job opportunities to make cash. At a cinema, she received free tickets for movies. At a restaurant she received free meals. Sometimes she worked at two different places. She had a job at an eyeglass factory, where she was responsible for in charge of examining lenses.
